Fearless Steeking
Instructor: Mariette Anderson
Level: Advanced Intermediate (Must be comfortable knitting in the round and reading colorwork charts)
Duration 3-Hour Sessions
Steeking—the process of cutting your circular knitting to create a flat fabric—is the ultimate "bravery test" for a knitter. In this masterclass, we move beyond the single cut. Students will transform four stranded colorwork tubes into a stunning patchwork cushion while mastering three distinct reinforcement methods. We will explore the physics of wool fibers and learn exactly why (and when) each steeking method is the right tool for the job.
What You Will Learn
-
The Physics of Fiber: Why "sticky" wool is your best friend and how to handle "slippery" yarns.
-
Felted Steeks: Using a felting needle fuse fibers before the cut.
-
Crochet Reinforcement: Creating a structural "hooked" edge that stabilizes the stitches.
-
Hand-Sewn Steeks: The classic, low-bulk method for elegant finishes.
-
The "Big Cut": Managing your nerves and your scissors for a clean edge.
-
Assembly: Joining your four steeked panels and finishing the cushion front.
Required Student Homework (Prior to Class)
To ensure we have plenty of time for reinforcing and cutting, students must arrive with the knitted tube completed (instructions provided upon registration.
-
Fiber: Must be 100% non-superwash wool.
Student Material List (To Bring)
-
The knitted tube (Blocked lightly if possible).
-
Sharp Embroidery Scissors: These must be sharp enough to snip a single ply of yarn.
-
Crochet Hook:
-
Reinforcement Yarn: A small amount of fingering weight, non-superwash wool in a high-contrast color.
-
Tapestry Needles: Sharp and blunt-tipped.
- "By the end of this session, students will have the confidence to tackle any steeked cardigan or colorwork pattern and a cushion front. I provide a supportive, 'mistake-friendly' environment where we celebrate the first snip!"
This workshop will take place during the Queen City Fibre Festival at the Bungee International Trade Center - Hall A from 12pm to 3pm.
